Finding and borrowing resources from libraries across the UC system is about to get easier!
Starting on July 27, 2021, all 10 campuses of the UC system will be connected through UC Library Search, a unified library discovery and borrowing system. UC Library Search features:
Ability to search your home campus library collection as well as the collections of all 10 UC libraries [and worldwide] in the same system
Ability to search collections and databases previously unavailable through Melvyl such as HathiTrust Digital Library and open access journals
Single sign on: check out and renew materials from any library in the UC system without needing to know your library card number
Full-text access to millions of online books, journal articles, and other digital content
Tools for saving searches, creating bibliographies, and creating alerts
UC Library Search replaces Melvyl as the UC-wide library search tool, and reduces existing fragmentation and integration shortcomings while providing improvements on our current discovery and borrowing services. As a single, unified system, UC Library Search offers the UC Libraries powerful tools to help libraries make data-informed decisions around collections development and new services for library users.

UC Library Search is powered by Ex Libris Alma/Primo, a centralized library management and discovery system for the collections and digital resources for the entire UC system. Prior to the launch of UC Library Search, each UC campus library used different systems to manage its print and electronic resources, with a separate system to manage inter-campus borrowing. UC Library Search brings together all 10 UC libraries plus the California Digital Library and two regional storage facilities into one system, streamlining workflows and enabling greater collaboration between campuses in collections management.
Improved Service:
A shared ILS makes campus collections integrated, shareable, more diverse, and user-friendly
Faster and easier access to the entire UC Libraries collection: 40+ million physical items plus digital collections
Ability to integrate additional third-party collections databases that are currently only offered to patrons as stand-alone services (e.g. HathiTrust Digital Library, open access journals, etc.)
Positions UC Libraries to make data-informed decisions around collections development and new services
Improved Infrastructure:
Current configuration of ten separate campus systems (some of which are aging) creates fragmentation and integration challenges that puts essential library services at risk
Enables library staff to innovate and create new services that were not possible in stand-alone campus ILS environments
Creates opportunities for integration with a variety of other library services and related products, such as learning-management systems, potentially improving workflows and reducing redundancies
Financial benefits:
Shared system costs 40% less than 10 campuses carrying out infrastructure improvements separately
With the implementation of UC Library Search, UC Libraries gain the ability to analyze how the collections are used, aggregating data that is critical for making collection development decisions as well as for vendor negotiations
Opportunities to improve workflows and reduce redundancies through integration with other products like student information systems or financial systems

Milestones
2017: Initial discussions and investigations to pursue a systemwide ILS
2018: Inventory of existing systems completed, plus requirements for a shared system
2019: Formal RFP; Ex Libris Alma/Primo selected to provide the services for UC Library Search
April 2020 - July 2021: Implementation carried out by representative groups from all 10 campuses + CDL
July 27, 2021: Go-Live

What will happen to Melvyl?
The name “Melvyl” will be retired. The Worldcat Discovery search tool that the UCs currently use will also be retired. (Copy some text from the About section on how Melvyl was a bunch of aging systems)
Will UC Library Search replace my own library catalog?
Yes. Individual campus catalogs will be replaced by UC Library Search, so that all UC Libraries will be on the same system. UC Library Search will now show your campus library’s holdings and also make it easy for you to find items at other UC libraries without having to type in your library card number or conduct your search in two different systems.
Will I still be able to borrow materials outside of the UC system?
Yes. No services will be reduced by UC Library Search. You will still be able to borrow materials from libraries worldwide through interlibrary loan.
Do I need to get a new library card?
No?
I have a lot of saved records in my old catalog system. Will those disappear?
