Recommendation

Bibliographic records added to the SILS NZ will require OCLC numbers with the following exceptions:

  • CZ records

  • “on order” brief bib records may eventually be added as the workflows listed here develop (see background below)

Reasoning

OCLC numbers serve as a key match point for a number of non-cataloging functions, including ILL and HathiTrust. In addition, since the UCs plan to implement WorldCat daily updates in the NZ, requiring OCLC numbers in those bibliographic records makes that service even more useful for NZ maintenance. RMFG is not opposed to adding non-OCLC records to the NZ in the future but would prefer to see specific use cases.

Background

AEFG had tested loading GOBI Brief Order Records in the NZ per the emerging or current practices of other consortia. AEFG elected to adopt loading these in the IZ with matching to the NZ once the full OCLC record was delivered until further testing could be done post-go-live

The Alma CZ bibliographic records do not always have OCLC Numbers

Primo replacing Melvyl means OCLC numbers are not as critical as they used to be for shared discovery
