Discussion items

DISCOVERY VISION: We strive to design and implement the best possible discovery and delivery experience for our end users using data-driven decision making. We envision a network zone experience that will allow users to discover library materials across UC collections without sacrificing relevant results. As such, the default search and results interface should prioritize the success of typical users while providing additional functionality for more advanced users.

RMFG: OA Icon

  • Some campuses display when at least 1 link points to an OA version

  • Other campuses display only when all links point to an OA version

  • Discovery thoughts? Due 3/29

PPC approved 2 decisions:

  • NZ Access: Access into the Network Zone (NZ) Alma instance will be determined on a case by case basis

  • Local bib data: Any data in the 5XX-7XX range that is local (that is not part of the OCLC master record) needs to be moved to a protected local field. In addition, Ex Libris recommends that institution-specific data be moved out of fields 900-949 and that only consortial data stay in those fields for the Network Zone. All campus-specific data in these fields needs to be relocated or deleted.

Discussion: Easy Active vs Fully Flexible

  • Will confirm with ExLibris that we truly have a choice

  • Which option does Discovery believe will provide the best user experience?

  • Jess will present about the discovery implications of the two options at the SILS Chairs mtg tomorrow (3/24)

  • OA Icon: Move discussion to Slack - decide whether OA icon should display only if all links are OA or if only one link is OA. @Jess Waggoner will clarify with RMFG whether they mean UC campuses when they say “some campuses”.

CDI: Easy Active vs Fully Flexible

Provide Discovery FG perspective for Wednesday All Chairs meeting

20 min

Ellen & Jared (CDI Sub-group)

  • Questions to consider: in EasyActive, work that we’re saving electronic resources staff from may be pushed out to reference/instruction staff (who may sometimes be students themselves) who have to help people with getting access to things they find

  • Need some context for the 4 billion Central Index records - how many of the 4 billion records could potentially be clutter (patents, etc.)?

  • Does not appear that CDI is returning expected number of records for results if EasyActive is on

  • @Jess Waggoner will check with ER/ACQ team why CDI results are not displaying as expected in Test if EasyActive is on.

UC-eLinks

Discuss re-name and logo

15 min

Jess & Michael

Literature review and environmental scan complete

  • Any other data needed to help strengthen our case to change the label now?

    • not a lot of existing literature about access labels

  • Preliminary thoughts on new label language?

    • Generally supportive of language that indicates clear path - “get it” vs “find online”

  • Decision deferred to next week. Contribute any new information (including local feedback) to document.

WorldCat

Check In - how are folks doing with WorldCat?

10 min

All

Relevant decision pages & docs:

  1. WorldCat Scope

  2. (Go Live) What to do with Basic WorldCat Discovery

  3. Pros/Cons: Worldcat.org vs Basic Discovery doc

5

Institution Boosting & Functionality Testing

Check In - how are folks doing with their institution boosting and functionality testing?

10 min

All

Relevant docs:

  1. Testing Plan folder

  2. Institution Boosting Testing doc

    1. Consider whether boosting is an MVP issue; some campuses agree this can be defaulted to the SUNY Buffalo recommendation for Production and tweaked after. This may also be affected by FRBR decision.
