Discussion items

DISCOVERY VISION: We strive to design and implement the best possible discovery and delivery experience for our end users using data-driven decision making. We envision a network zone experience that will allow users to discover library materials across UC collections without sacrificing relevant results. As such, the default search and results interface should prioritize the success of typical users while providing additional functionality for more advanced users.

PPC Update (Josephine):

Next Week we will regroup on “Exclude from Discovery Network” work. Locally, we should set this up in Sandboxes and be prepared to discuss next week.

All: set up configuration to exclude local resources from discovery network ASAP and test, be prepared to discuss next week.

Displaying resource sharing links for e-books

All

From Heather’s Slack post (9/2/21):

“There is a parameter called "discovery_display_resource_sharing_when_electronic_available" (ALMA config menu -> Discovery --> Custom settings.
The parameter needs to be set to "true" so resource sharing link will display when online full-text is available. It's documented here:
https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Primo/Product_Documentation/020Primo_VE/Primo_VE_(English)/120Other_Configurations/Discovery_Customer_Settings  And in more details in the August 2020 release notes here:

  • UCM, and UCSD are looking at this in one way or another. UCR also interested. Goal is to have ILL forms turned on for e-books we have access to, but not turned on for ALL e-resources. The solution above applies for ALL e-resources. Elizabeth has also posted to Basecamp asking specifically about e-books. We are waiting on ExL response.

Configurations locally can impact users' ability to find records for print items when we own the e-books (things like FRBR’ed results set impact this). Blank ILL request forms are an option

  • Find by Citation - varies by campus how using this, but none seem to be using this directly on home page. User education around how to translate searching for a full citation into UC Library Search.

  • can be information overload to dump full citation into AB&M search box (e.g. if give more info than is available in the CDI record, UC Library Search may not see it as a match).

  • Getting bizarre ILL requests. User requested one book and what was sent was completely unrelated. Getting requests for things already owned. Can’t determine how users are coming to find an ILL form for these.

Introduce topics to cover

Continued to add to and discuss the post-mortem document.

Check Ins

Discuss updates/problems/testing

All

1) SCP records for CDL databases. Update on request from Shi Deng to allow searching 930 field (formerly 793 field) as an option in Advanced Search.

Shi followed up with a detailed response. Everyone check your emails.

  • Michael heard through Riverside of a recent discussion of decision to unsuppress records in the CZ for all SCP records. Project underway to improve cataloging on these records. Refer to email forward for details and check in with local teams as appropriate.

2) Special Collections that should be restricted from displaying the ILL form. This needs to be managed in NZ, so Jess has compiled their local list and sent to CDL for adding to NZ. Jess will send us an update once this is set up so we can help test.

3) Teaching with UC Library Search: how are people doing with this?

  • Script for teaching Grad Students and Undergrads might be quite different.

    • UG: start with UC libray search + specialized databases.

    • Grad: start with key databases then go to UC Library Search to fill in additional sources.

    • Using highly controlled vocabularies, like ‘empirical research’ limiters in Psychology fields, is just not possible in the same way in UC LIbrary Search as when in a specialized database.

  • Building “pros and cons” list for when to search UC Library Search for teaching scripts and instructional tools. Articulating strengths of this tool vs others and when starting here makes sense, what limitations are, etc. Will vary discipline, for Interdisciplinary fields, etc.

4) Usability Studies: Jess will share the test scripts they wrote for their local testing.

all: check email for SCP request and read and discuss in Slack after meeting.

Review email from Michael to see if any local action required
