Discussion items

DISCOVERY VISION: We strive to design and implement the best possible discovery and delivery experience for our end users using data-driven decision making. We envision a network zone experience that will allow users to discover library materials across UC collections without sacrificing relevant results. As such, the default search and results interface should prioritize the success of typical users while providing additional functionality for more advanced users.

Review and Fist-of-Five for approval

Jess

  • Do Not Display Resource Sharing (Request through Interlibrary Loan) Link for Items from Restricted Locations

    • If there are items that exist in multiple locations and one of them is requestable, users should still be able to see a resource sharing request option for the requestable item.

    • Removal of the resource sharing option will effect all items at a location, even if there are some individual items in that location that do circulate

    • Sometimes campuses do share some special collections materials by special request, and this should not prevent those practices from happening

    • Campus special collections materials stored at the RLFs need to be added separately

  • Exclude Records from Discovery Network

    • Concerns expressed from campuses

      • Technical debt involved in creating new search profiles to exclude these items when an item note would serve the same purpose

      • Catalogers dislike the use of the 520 field for this purpose (ExL limitation)

      • Is it useful for researchers to be able to find everything, even if they can’t request it?

  • Do not display resource sharing link for items from restricted locations

    • Add background information about items with multiple locations

    • Add Special Collections Escalation Group as a consulting group

  • Exclude records from discovery network

    • Would like more input from local campuses

  • Do not display resource sharing link for items from restricted locations

    • @Jess Waggoner will share some examples in UCSC’s sandbox that other campuses can view as an example

    • @Jess Waggoner will update materials and DFG will review and approve on Slack before sending to consulting groups

  • Exclude records from discovery network

    • @Jess Waggoner will draft discussion template with examples for us to use

    • Each campus should take this back to their local groups and get more feedback on the effort required and whether the restricted locations decision could be used instead (report back in two weeks)

Making 930 Field searchable Discussion

Determine next steps

Jared

  • Davis has enabled this in their sandbox for testing

  • There is concern about using Primo for staff searching needs; do we need to determine process for how future requests should be reviewed?

  • If we approve this decision, it should be revisited in X years to see if it’s still needed

@Jared Campbell will share Davis sandbox link so we can do some searches and bring back feedback
