Description | ExLibris has begun to allow customers to move to Primo NDE. In November 2025 UC will have access to NDE and will be able to start reviewing its functionality. The Discovery OST and campus discovery groups have had discussions on whether a coordinated 10 campus + CDL migration would be preferable to campuses migrating on their own individual timelines. |
Decision summary | Discovery recommends that UC carries out any future migration to NDE by all campuses and CDL as a single project. This will allow better coordination of the testing of consortial functionality in NDE. It will also enable campuses to share configuration knowledge in a more coordinated way with a higher potential for harmonization. |

Recommendation
Discovery recommends that UC carries out any future migration to NDE by all campuses and CDL as a single project. This will allow better coordination of the testing of consortial functionality in NDE. It will also enable campuses to share configuration knowledge in a more coordinated way with a higher potential for harmonization.
NOTE: We will not be able to start testing the NDE until November 2025.
[We aren’t recommending a date because the consortial features are not live or testable yet and are non-starters for various stakeholder groups.]

Monthly Release Plan (Consortia-Related)
With the General Release, any consortium member can start testing the NDE UI like any other institution. Members will see the following elements of search scopes: consortia and cross-institution search scopes, CDI, local data and external sources. In addition, they will see cross-institution facets.
Below is a breakdown of features available after the General Release, according to the monthly release schedule.

Reasoning
Discovery recommends that if UC decides to migrate to NDE it should be done by all ten campuses and CDL as a single consortial project. This will allow better coordination of the testing of Network Zone (NZ) functionality in NDE. It will also enable campuses to share configuration knowledge in a more coordinated way with a higher potential for harmonization.
Background
Per ExLibris “The NDE (Next-Generation Discovery Experience) UI provides library users with a modern, streamlined interface.” NDE is currently being rolled out to to those customers who are looking to go live with the new interface in March of 2026. UC will be able to access NDE during the General Release beginning in November of 2025.
ExLibris is giving institutions 2-3 years to plan and transition to NDE once it becomes generally available. If the University decides to migrate to NDE, UC SILS will need to test new functionality (especially improvements promised by ExLibris related to consortial functionality), rewrite any campus customization/branding and set carry out any new NDE specific configuration.
Discovery OST had several discussions to determine if there is a preference for UC campuses to move to NDE in a coordinated single project with CDL or to let campus choose to schedule there own migrations. The result of these discussions was a clear consensus among the Discovery OST members for a coordinated approach. OST members also consulted with their local campus Discovery teams. When Discovery reconvened there was again clear consensus among the local groups that any migration to NDE should be carried out as a consortial project.
