DCFG Post Go-Live Harvesting Metadata for Finding Aids

Recommendation

At this point, the DCFG recommends not harvesting metadata for finding aids from OAC into Primo VE.

Reasoning

During the Test Phase, DCFG experimented with harvesting finding aids from OAC into Primo VE as a metadata source for collection-level representations of digital collections. Although DCFG’s charge was to explore Primo VE’s potential for making the UC’s rare and unique digital resources more discoverable and visible, we thought this would be a useful test case. Our experience evaluating the OAC finding aids (and derivatives) in Primo VE has convinced us that this would not be a valuable process for the following reasons:

• Many campuses have a established practice of creating collection-level MARC records for archival collections that link to the finding aids in OAC or in their local website (we may want to work with Discovery on ways to make those links more visible in Primo VE). We encourage campuses to explore creating collection-level MARC records for archival collections, and linking to finding aids and digital collections content from those records, if they are not doing so already.

• Many or most finding aids contain no digitized content, and/or are for collections that have not been digitized. If there is digitized content in the finding aids, harvesting the finding aid metadata into Primo VE will not make the associated digitized items available.

• For archival content that has been digitized, it is generally preferable to harvest that content from Calisphere or local repositories, or to link to it from the collection-level MARC record.
