Why is the preferred record for print/electronic displaying as print?

Thoughts

I noticed an issue in Alma where I couldn’t add Criteria: Availability right off the bat. I’d have to add Date or Resource first, then the Availability option showed in the drop down. It was weird. I also had to “Add and Close” instead of just “Add.” It might be a one-off issue for me though.

The availability is whichever record was used by Primo to make the “representation” in the brief results. Unsure why the chosen record is 4th in the group though

.The sorting of FRBRized records is a known issue with Ex Libris with multiple tickets open

.

It’s being worked on.
How would deduping affect this result?

I’m uncertain why Alma-D and E had the same results. I’m also not sure why the print is the preferred record when the electronic one is still right there. My settings appear to be correct…

Criteria for the DEDUP preferred record

[ALMA-P, ALMA-D, or ALMA-E]
This test has the criteria for FRBR and DEDUP be the same.

FRBR AND DEDUP

Preferred FRBR Record = Print (ALMA-P)
Preferred DEDUP Record = Print (ALMA-P)

Preferred FRBR Record = Electronic (ALMA-E)
Preferred DEDUP Record = Electronic (ALMA-E)

Print Only

Shakespeare

Burgess, Anthony, 1917-1993.

Image Added

FRBRized record. UCR has multiple print-only records which is implied by the “and other locations” part of the link.

The FRBR record has both locations and links to other UC locations. This is as expected.

Image Added

Note that only 3 versions are found, not 4 anymore because the 2 UCR copies are deduped.

Image Added

Same as Alma-P, BUT this record is now first. Without an electronic version, there should be no change now that the bug has been fixed.

Electronic Only

Shakespeare

Egan, Gabriel.

Image Added

2 versions now as opposed to 5 without dedup on. Links are as expected.

Same as Alma-P, except it’s result 8.

Both Print and Electronic

Shakespeare

Herder, Johann Gottfried, 1744-1803.

One deduped record with our print and electronic holdings and links to other UC Locations. This is what we’d expect and want.

Image Added

Similar to Alma-P, except it’s now result 10, and it’s using a different (the electronic) record. (note “Course Book” and the copyright symbol).

Preferred FRBR Record = Electronic (ALMA-E)
Preferred DEDUP Record = Print (ALMA-P)

Image Added

Back to #1 because it’s using the Print record as the preferred dedup record.

Thoughts

Without Dedup, Herder’s record was a 5 record FRBR group. With dedup it’s just one record.

Campuses may want to consider using Print Preferred records if print records tend to be better overall.

NO FRBR, DEDUP ONLY

Preferred FRBR Record = None
Preferred DEDUP Record = Print (ALMA-P)

Preferred FRBR Record = None
Preferred DEDUP Record = Electronic (ALMA-E)

Print Only

Shakespeare

Burgess, Anthony, 1917-1993.

Image Added

Notice this time there is no FRBR group. But I also don’t have the other 2 Burgess records among the initial 50 results. Could this be related to boosting? The first 10 results are either physically or electronically held by UCR.
I only surfaced the other books when I did an advanced exact title and author search.

Same result since this is Print Only.

Electronic Only

Shakespeare

Egan, Gabriel.

Image Added

No change since deduplication makes it no longer a FRBR group.

No change as this is Electronic Only and not FRBR.

Both Print and Electronic

Shakespeare

Herder, Johann Gottfried, 1744-1803.

Image Added

No change since deduplication makes it no longer a FRBR group.

Back to position 10, using the electronic record.

Perhaps no frbr with a dedup might be beneficial.
