Recommendation

Part 1: Which pick up locations require specific instructions for special pick-up. We should compile a list of current text blurbs for covid19 delivery arrangements. It is structurally easier to create the XSL if each of these text blurbs can be reasonably appended to the end of the generic message in part 3.

We should keep the number of these to a minimum.

Part 2: Can Campus Institutions settle on a single centralized contact email and/or phone to appear in the footer of each notice? That contact would need to be able to answer, triage and refer for all pickup locations. 10 campus contacts will be much less likely to require huge amounts of change and maintenance.

Part 3: Compose a generic “On Hold Shelf Letter”. Construction of the XSL is much easier if the text of the generic letter works with a special message appended to the end. Replacing rather than appending is much more difficult.

Reasoning

 

Background

Because Alma AFN requests resolve themselves as transactions between a user and the owning library, Alma notices originate from the owning institution rather than the institution where the requester wishes to pick up. Under more normal circumstances a generic message might serve to get the end user to the point of pick-up. Covid19 health restrictions and responses have complicated that situation. Several libraries are using novel delivery approaches – curbside pickup, self service pickup, shipping service etc. Furthermore, the contact information in the footer of these notices by default references the lending library rather than the pick up library.
