DISCOVERY VISION: We strive to design and implement the best possible discovery and delivery experience for our end users using data-driven decision making. We envision a network zone experience that will allow users to discover library materials across UC collections without sacrificing relevant results. As such, the default search and results interface should prioritize the success of typical users while providing additional functionality for more advanced users.

Basic WorldCat Discovery Discussion with Alison Ray

(Go Live) What to do with Basic WorldCat Discovery

Discussion notes https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jKQE6gm5UUd9-NK_LYAdnU3uL_518lyW4S8jAC43J-U/edit?usp=sharing

  • Could we use the WorldCat logo next to campus name in the upper left of BWCD homepage? Would need to provide an image for each campus (needs to be a single image file).

  • OCLC policy is that WorldCat record links need to work universally, i.e. not “subscriptionized links”

  • Get it at UC link will not appear on brief results - unlike when we were discussing and evaluating at different campuses and within Disco FG earlier in the year.

  • June 27 is when links to Primo (Get it at UC) in WorldCat basic will change to point to Primos vs. CDL’s link resolver that we think of as UC eLinks.

  • Full records will show list of holding libraries - failure to show in test env. is just a glitch in OCLC’s “modernized” instance

  • Link to continue using in Primo or in campus websites or LibGuides: [campus initials].on.worldcat.org

  • Colors in WC do differ from current standards

  • LHR data as its currently displayed is changing b/c of UI. New LHR option can’t be limited to serials - it’ll be for all content types. But WC local is not a backup or an alternative to Primo, so we’re more concerned about availability for other campuses

See https://uc-sils.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/DF/pages/1295056966/Go%2BLive%2BWhat%2Bto%2Bdo%2Bwith%2BBasic%2BWorldCat%2BDiscovery

  • Logo area idea - [Campus] Library WorldCat. (After review of http://Uwashington.on.worldcat.org )

    • We like “Library” in there to make explicit Library’s role

  • Resources Links in the footer - let’s harmonize b/c it’ll be lower maintenance and simplify life.

  • Color scheme re-alignment to current UC-ok’d colors is great - thumbs up from Disco FG.

  • uc.on.worldcat.org will be replacement url for melvyl.on.worldcat.org

  • All campuses will use “realigned” color scheme - nothing customized to differentiate them.

  • New timeline = ok.

  • Alison Ray (CDL) will email OCLC about using the rainbow swirl
  • Disco FG will come up with list for Alison.
  • Alison Ray (CDL) will handle realigned colors e.g. “old” yellow turns into a slightly different gold
  • Alison Ray (CDL) will try to get a couple screen shots from production + mock up for how it might look in modernized WC

PPC: Our decision page approved:

https://uc-sils.atlassian.net/l/c/HujzDguW

SILS WG: A large contingent from the SILS cohort met with Ex Libris technical staff regarding the slowness we are observing in both Primo VE and Alma, and noting that it is not in compliance with our SLA. Ex Libris staff attempted to reassure us that at go live speeds will increase. However, the Working Group is creating monitoring and escalation plans in case this does not happen as promised. Also, the Working Group formed a small group to work on risk assessment tasks for go-live delay, including a communication plan and flowchart with scenarios that all campuses/CDL and CoUL agree to.

Other groups' approved decisions:

  1. AEFG: (Go-Live) E-Resources Troubleshooting: Best Practices for Reporting Broken Links in CDL/SCP Records, etc. (MVP 008)

  2. AEFG:(Go-Live) Configuration of E-Resources/Discovery Settings in Alma (AEFG MVP 014)

  3. RMFG: (Go-live and beyond) WorldCat Daily Updates

  4. RMFG: Go-live and beyond) Best practices for holdings and item records

  5. RMFG: (Go-live and beyond) Setting holdings in OCLC at the campus level

  6. RMFG: (Go-live) Starter set of UC-wide normalization, merge, and indication rules

  7. ICs/CDL NZ Admins: (Test Load + 3 months) Managing work in the Alma NZ instance
