DISCOVERY VISION: We strive to design and implement the best possible discovery and delivery experience for our end users using data-driven decision making. We envision a network zone experience that will allow users to discover library materials across UC collections without sacrificing relevant results. As such, the default search and results interface should prioritize the success of typical users while providing additional functionality for more advanced users.

Josephine

PPC: Continuing to finalize the Work Handoff sheet; RMFG finalized their decision page for (post Go-live) WorldCat daily updates

2

PPC’s feedback on 930 & 973 decision

All

(Go Live) Make the 930 Field Searchable in Primo

PPC feedback: how does this interact with our catalog processes. Jess will reach out to RMFG to get the background info on that.

RMFG feedback: asked about the 973 fields (info about local packages). For those who want 973 searchable (and the 930), would we recommend that they are mapped together to search in 1 place as “package name”?

Davis plans to move info out of 973 to e-collections.

We don’t really know the use cases well enough to answer RMFG’s question.

Berkeley: Procedures haven’t been figured out on how to handle requests for local fields being indexed.

973 are local fields and local campuses and should campuses figure this out themselves? Or does Discovery FG need to “endorse” this.

3

Finalize Restrict Resource Sharing Restriction Rules by Location decision

All

Need to get campus contacts in place (can send to PPC without this piece in place, keep a placeholder there)

  •  everyone email the group on contact info
4

FRBR & Dedup Discussion

Jess

RMFG to create the FRBR suppression rule and then contact CDL to coordinate testing in the NZ Sandbox.

Looks like music is working in our testing, so we need to reach out to the music experts to test.

Test Law materials next, with Sean working on it for their law materials, since this would be by location.

Will need to work on art books in the future

  •  Jess Waggoner talk with Chizu and Ellen to reach out to music people.
  •  Jess Waggoner send music examples to the group to pass on to local music experts as well.

Liz (RMFG) answer: DFG won’t have to worry about working directly on 973 local field work

Shouldn’t be a problem to map 930 and 973 fields; Campuses can also keep them separate; Decided campus-by-campus

Bibilographers use this for their work

See Liz’s email

Local decision - talk to your bibliographers

Do-not-Limit-to-Availability affect on ILL:

UCSD - initially had some requests going into an undefined queue; scanning and delivery got requests for items UCSD didn’t have - users may have been using search box and not via Citation Search to make requests

UCD - Fulfillment educating public services on what requests mean, what best workflows to follow

UCB - working on other ILL troubleshooting; not sure if related to Do Not Limit to Availabilty; some problematic requests; will work on this in the next six months

UCR - users think everything they see on screen can be accessed; maybe don’t use the citation request properly

How to find a balance between reliable requests vs. discoverability

UCM - trying to keep closer to previous Melvyl experience; reassess decisions in Spring semester; users saying they can’t access via VPN - have to educate them that they must sign in to VPN first

UCLA - same experience as others; working on electronic resources; don’t put filters on for now; SLRF items that don’t circulate but requestable - hard for some users to understand

UCSC - ILL getting tons of unfulfilled requests; go to end of rota (unfillable when it actually can be); bogging all ILL requests; 5 or 6 things can be contributing to these problems; science library stacks currently request only, so increases ILL requests ; ExL does not curate CDI {Sarah - CDL has escalated this to ExL; is definitetly an ExL-only component to fix; Could be a setting that only ExL can see that is causing this. ExL says they don’t know what’s causing this. Issue being seen at UCSC, UCLA, UCB, UCSD}

Open URL - database searching - UC Library Search:

UCM - getting a bit of loading delay; Get it at UC does load; undergrads using and like UC Library Search

Heather: Teaches how to find special collections; teaching about how to use filters (MARC fields related); search more about non-CDI things and be more local materials; tell people to start with Advanced Search; local materials (catalog) are coming up at the top of UC Library search results; Making resource types more accurate - try not to relate to it with still clean up work being worked on; cognitive load improvement for her research

Jess Usability work: what are user expectations; surprised by how quickly can get materials; UC Library Search has removed barriers to access

SILS Operations Team would be great

UCSB - launching Browzine tomorrow menu bar - will be on ; Libguide already made; UCD public services librarians asking for Browzine; UCLA doesn’t use the “Browzine” name, uses journals search and then links Primo VE facets to search Browzine ; Jess - Third Iron will send you quarterly stats reports on BrowZine and LibKey via email if you ask them; Can ask Third Iron for teaching handouts; Michael - teaches Browzine for lit review researchers - how to build personal journal collection - Browzine in libguide - https://guides.lib.ucr.edu/biochem - using widget - https://holdingsuploads.thirdiron.com/widget/ - try putting into Primo VE journal search page (UCLA may try this out on the Journals search page - https://search.library.ucla.edu/discovery/jsearch?vid=01UCS_LAL:UCLA)

(Heather) HATHI Trust question: had a catalog record that linked to HATHI Trust - once ETAS went away, now not showing up easily in Primo VE; Chizu kept the plug-in for their Primo VE, so no problem, still seeing a HATHI Trust item listing; UCD will have plug-in again after resubmission of holdings (Jared does this AND the plug-in)
