URIs in MARC records in the UC Network Zone

Purpose

This document provides guidance on handling URIs embedded in MARC records, including subfields $0, $1, and $4.

To learn more about URIs, including what they are, start with the FAQs created by the PCC URI Task Group on URIs in MARC:

What to do when coming across MARC records with URIs?

No action is required. Accept URIs in Alma MARC records as provided.

Catalogers are not required to maintain or preserve URIs in MARC records. Do not worry about losing the existing URIs in Alma bibliographic records due to bringing in the most up-to-date WorldCat records. URIs will be brought back during the WorldCat Daily Update.

What do URIs in MARC records look like?

Yellow: Authority record URI

Orange: Real World Object URI

What do URIs do?

At this moment, neither Alma nor Primo actively use URIs; however, Ex Libris is working on developing a Primo service that will use URIs to generate info cards. In addition, URIs will play crucial roles in transforming MARC records into linked data.

How to get URIs for MARC records?

Two common ways to get URIs for MARC records are:

  1. WorldShare Record Manager

    1. When exporting MARC records from WorldShare Record Manager, URIs for selected name and subject authorities can be embedded in 1XX, 6XX, 7XX, and 8XX in subfield $0 for controlled headings.

Instructions on how to configure URI enrichment:https://help.oclc.org/Metadata_Services/WorldShare_Record_Manager/Bibliographic_records/Export_MARC_21_records/Export_preferences#Set_preferences_for_Uniform_Resource_Identifiers_(URIs)_export

Note: This functionality is only available in Record Manager and is not available in Connexion.

  2. MarcEdit’s Build Linked Records

    1. The Build Linked Records function in MarcEdit loops through a set of MARC records and embeds URIs in 1XX, 6XX, and 7XX in subfields $0 and/or $1 for corresponding authorities.

      More information about this functionality:

Catalogers are not required to add URIs in MARC records. If opting to include URIs, they should be added in alignment with existing campus policies and procedures.
