Recommendation

RMFG has created the following rules for campuses to use on Day 1. Use cases are not exhaustive and each rule has comment in Alma about what they’re intended to do.

Normalization:

Merge:

  • allUC Merge rule #1: for use with NZ import profiles, the OCLC Gateway integration, and WorldCat Daily Updates

  • allUC MDE External Search Merge #1: for use with importing records into the NZ from “external resources” in the Alma Metadata Editor (MDE)

Indication:

  • allUC Exclude from WorldCat Updates

  • allUC Filter out e-audio

  • allUC Filter out e-videos

  • allUC Filter out serials & integrating resources

Reasoning

Each of the rules is intended to protect local data and allow the widest acceptable range of non-local fields into the NZ record. They draw heavily on existing rules at already-Alma campuses. After consulting documentation from other consortia and considering the various needs at each campus, RMFG has taken a fairly lightweight approach to normalization in terms of whether to remove certain subject or descriptive fields. The group hopes to gather more feedback as campuses start working with the rules in our production environment and adjusting as necessary. The rules reside in the NZ but campuses are encouraged to reuse them in their IZ workflows as needed/wanted.
