Taking a user-centered approach to testing/assessing digital collections discovery in Primo VE

A sampling of CDL’s User Experience materials

Group wants to make sure that we are keeping the user experience in mind. Rachael Hu is joining us to talk about her work in this area for CDL.

  1. What questions are coming up for this group in particular?

  2. How might existing work be extended to help with this?

CDL User Experience team works across all CDL services. Racheal shared user personas developed by CDL team, as well as a bit about the process used to developed them.

Is Discovery Group going to be looking at the user experience at collection by collection? This group is trying to figure out the best way for us to test our recommendations. We are trying to do that internally.

Racheal suggested reviewing the CDL developed personas, especially researcher roles to really understand them. Then go to Vanguard and look at heuristics – do people know where to go? do people know what is available? May get a better sense. Perhaps come up with a special heuristic checklist? That will allow us to provide better feedback and reconsider decisions based on that. Especially collection vs. object decisions. This group needs a body of data in order to review record types.

Rachel J. spoke to her team at UCSC – they will have the capacity to push a collection-level record from their DAMS to Primo. This will help with comparisons.

Rachael offered to send some samples of heuristics and then help the group brainstorm heuristics that might be helpful in evaluating the group’s work.

Racheal Hu will send sample heuristics and will also share links to more complete CDL user personas in Google Docs.

@Lisa Schiff (Unlicensed) will send the group’s email addresses to Rachael Hu.

Systemwide issue spreadsheet

A walkthrough

15

Rachel/Lisa

Rachel and Lisa shared the systemwide issue spreadsheet. The two of them met with Kathryn Stine today to add HathiTrust items – brought up questions about the purpose of the sheet. Who created it and what is its purpose? Can we freely add to this? Or do we need to stick with what has been created?

Purpose of this spreadsheet as it was created by the PPC is to track things that do not need to be decided during Vanguard or testing phase; rather identify work that might be eligible to be systemwide work that can be done after go-live. But Claudia can be the added items to PPC.

Similar concern around handling ETDs.

@Claudia Horning (Unlicensed) will bring the HathiTrust related items to PPC after she receives the 1-page description from Kathryn Stine

@Lisa Schiff (Unlicensed) will ask Kathryn Stine for a 1-pager about HathiTrust process

@Lisa Schiff (Unlicensed) will write up a 1-pager about ETD concerns

UCLA is going to try using an existing OAI-PMH data provider (old repository) to get some collections into our Primo VE; this may or may not get done during the Vanguard

Harry Mayo Surfing Photography Collection is the other collection that we have up in our local Primo: https://ucsc.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/search?sortby=rank&vid=01CDL_SCR_INST:USCS&lang=en

In addition to the Marion Ruth Baruch collection
