Issue: Search and Browse Digitial Objects (Urgency: Medium)

Taken from Critical SILS Issues

Summary: UC libraries are running various digital asset management systems (DAMs) &/or institutional repositories (IRs). In addition, there is the Calisphere digital asset management system. These DAMS and IRs contain digital objects like ETDs, journal articles, data sets, images, audio, video, manuscripts and even files to drive the 3D rendering of scanned objects. It would be advantageous for many researchers to be able to search and browse these digital objects in one centralized discovery platform. The UC libraries must set up and maintain a harvesting workflow to gather metadata from the various DAMs and IRs via protocols like the OAI-PMH.

  • Setting up a harvesting workflow to make UC DAMS more visible in the discovery layer.

  • Starting point could be looking at what is currently being harvested into OCLC's Worldcat?

  • We should also consider conducting an environmental scan and then moving on to a needs assessment.

    • The environmental scan would help us find out what is working well and what is not working well so that we have opportunities and/or can consider risks.

    • Well will need survey questions to send out to UC representatives.

@Lisa Schiff (Unlicensed) will create a Google doc and will share with the group by Wednesday EOD. DONE https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nfbum_AXEpOquqS_YLKaJsjBTslZdbZC00ZJ5e9N9zU/edit#
