Discussion items

DISCOVERY VISION: We strive to design and implement the best possible discovery and delivery experience for our end users using data-driven decision making. We envision a network zone experience that will allow users to discover library materials across UC collections without sacrificing relevant results. As such, the default search and results interface should prioritize the success of typical users while providing additional functionality for more advanced users.

PPC: Our decision page approved:

(Go Live) Managing local fields for display, search, facet

Other groups' approved decisions:

AEFG (Go-Live) Electronic Resources Practices - Linking IZ orders to relevant CDL e-collections (MVP 001)

AEFG (002) - (Go-Live) Campus Purchase Order Practices for CDL and Related Local E-Resources (AEFG-MVP-002)

RMFG (Go-live and beyond) Best practices for repository* import profiles

RMFG (Go-live and beyond) Deleting UC Network Zone bibliographic records

RMFG (Go-live and beyond) OCLC numbers in UC Network Zone bibliographic records

Fulfillment (Go-Live) Document Delivery Service (DDS) Setup

June 8th: all our Day 1 related decisions should be made

Decision pages that cover issues related to the NZ need to be tagged NZ. No DFG decisions pages currently deal with NZ issues so need to go back and tag.

AEON integration: Sharon and Jared described an issue they were having with UCD and UCLA’s Aeon integration with records without item records. Ellen and Chizu both suggested that item can be created in batch. Chizu will provide contact info to Susan and Jared to UCSB’s “expert.”

Fullfillment FG suggested that DFG should add language explaining the need for user authentication when using http://worldcat.org to be able see “Get it at UC” links. Jess also asked campuses to review the Worldcat decisions spreadsheet this week so that the final WorldCat decision page could be submitted.

The Internal Training Group is asking for all “best practices” documentation to be submitted to them so that can be included in training materials.

Lisa had a question about campus FRBR settings. Many campuses have FRBR turned off since NZ FRBR rules have not been set. UCD has both FRBR and Dedup turned off as a result of a holdings display issue with its Law school records (Basecamp and Saleforce tickets have been submitted). For now FRBR decisions need to made at the local level (at least until NZ rules are set).

Basic WorldCat Discovery vs. Worldcat.org

Answer the questions for consideration

(Go Live) Basic WorldCat Discovery Configuration

Alison’s Reply:

  1. How close is the current v2 version of BWCD to the final version? (Are there any big configuration changes still outstanding?)
Answer: There are still some unanswered questions on the decision page (under ‘questions to consider’):

    a. What name (and logo) to use for basic WorldCat Discovery? (I will need the updated image in order to put the image into place)

    b. What name to replace the “Melvyl” for the UC-wide basic WorldCat Discovery, https://melvyl.worldcat.org ? (the word ‘melvyl’ in that URL needs to be changed)

    c. Color scheme and/or specific colors? (make similar to PrimoVE color scheme?) ; I see it says ‘all use the same color scheme’, but is that the color scheme that is currently in use on the site? [There is a bug in the color scheme that OCLC says will be fixed later this month]

  2. What will ultimately go in the "Access Options" box? The contents have shifted over the last month or so. Will the Get it at UC button be there? Or only at the bottom of the full record?
Answer: I’ll ask OCLC what their plans are for this box. Is it desirable to have the ‘get it at uc’ link appear in that box for all records?

  3. Will the "Get it at UC" button be included in the brief results?
Answer: I’ll ask OCLC (but I don’t think so).

  4. If we choose to exclude some of the FirstSearch base package databases from our default BWCD search, can users add them back in using facets or Adv search?
Answer: The databases could be excluded completely, or taken out of the default search. If they’re taken out of the default search, then users could opt to put them in under the ‘advanced search’.

  5. Could you expand more on the question about LHR data? Would this determine whether or not location information (like Call #, etc.) is displayed in BWCD?
Answer: We’ve not been using LHRs under this option, but here is OCLC’s documentation: https://help.oclc.org/Librarian_Toolbox/OCLC_Service_Configuration/WorldCat_Discovery_and_WorldCat_Local/070Local_and_Enhanced_Content?sl=en ; OCLC has said that we would not be able to do ‘only serials’ under this option, and the LHR translations would need to be entered (for all locations, currently only done for locations that hold serials). If the LHR translation isn’t updated, then the four-letter ‘LHR code’ will appear instead of the actual location name. The ILS liaisons (https://cdlib.org/services/d2d/ill/teams-contacts/ils-liaisons/) currently send updates to CDL for LHR location translations additions/updates/deletions, CDL then enters this information manually for WorldCat Discovery display.

QUESTIONS:

  • What is the purpose of BWCD? Answer: Place to go to find non-UC materials. And a “transition” tool for “Melvyl Nativists.”

  • What suggestion(s) would we provide for using Worldcat.org if any campus should choose that alternative in the future?

Jess will ask Alison to attend our next meeting to walk through some of the issues.

  • Revisit the decision 6 months post-go-live

First Look Sessions

Share feedback for any campuses that have hosted a first look session

20 min

All

UCSD and UCB have both held SILS first look sessions. UCSD was primarily an information session providing context to what the SILS environment will look like and how that translates to the discovery interface.

UCB has done two sessions; 1. Used screen shots 2. Used live searching. Will holding “Search Parties” where users will be able to do hands on testing.

UCR: Nothing planned as of now.

UCD: High level SILS unveil on June 16th. Discovery drop in sessions on June 22 and 23.
