DISCOVERY VISION: We strive to design and implement the best possible discovery and delivery experience for our end users using data-driven decision making. We envision a network zone experience that will allow users to discover library materials across UC collections without sacrificing relevant results. As such, the default search and results interface should prioritize the success of typical users while providing additional functionality for more advanced users.

Jess

Discussed upcoming Feb 5 recommendations deadline and how we might share local/statewide information discussions amongst ourselves efficiently.

End User Naming Subgroup (EUNS): Delivering proposal to Working Group, asking them to adopt one of two approaches: minimalist approach (UC Library Search) or distinctive approach (UC Beacon) for further consideration and decision. Feedback was very helpful, and their proposal will likely be reviewed and discussed Working Group meeting before the end of January.

Josephine will update and reorganize Configuration Confluence page to add new useful docs and highlight most relevant for our Jan config decisions push.

Call for RLF “subgroup” members

Recruit a few members

10 min

All

Reminder that we need a few members to represent discovery on the RLF subgroup. Knowing the timeline for this work would help members know if they will have bandwidth. Several members suggested interest, but concern about capacity.

Josephine/Jess will check in on the timeline. Group members will consider their ability to join.

Search Profiles Discussion

Review and work on document

60 min

All

Search Profiles document: discussed this draft document with an eye to sharing with local groups for feedback. Considerations of ongoing decisions in other groups include:

  • some data may be entered at network zone only (decisions/discussions in process): Calisphere, SCP collections, potentially others?

  • what are ILL impacts. If ebooks are not loanable, but e book chapters and articles are, what decisions make most sense?

What should the Everything search profile include?

  • probably want to have an everything search, but what should we include so that users understand what that means?

Default search profiles: important decision to make. the default set up for default search is Library Catalog, but, this does not need to be the case and good reasons to make other decisions.

World Cat profiles:

  • Is a WorldCat scope within Primo essential? Fulfillment group is assuming this will happen, and have thought this through carefully. If we recommend moving another direction, will need to have a bigger discussion with that group.

  • Functional limitations to this scope, but it does enable users to searc

  • whatever request link is put in, it will work for any kind of request - one form whether from another UC or another

Decision page for World Cat scope in particular, to document the limitations and background discussions that lead to decision.

Other decision pages may include:

  • everything

  • ucs network scope

  • default orders of scopes

  • other?

Edits to draft document before sharing with local groups

  • add a few additional examples mentioned during discussion

  • consider moving definitions to the top

  • consider including info about which direction we are leaning

  • some screenshots to show options of a couple of options

Jess and Ellen will spend a couple of days thinking through how to clean up this doc a bit, and consider ways to gather feedback.

Feedback from local discovery group, other local leads as appropriate for feedback.

Ellen will start some decision pages.

Note from @Sharon Shafer (Unlicensed) regarding agenda item 1. UCLA Library ingested the Film and Television Library catalog records during the Alma data harvest and there was concern about the unique needs of item display and search for the film and television records. UCLA Discovery Functional Group started a document to examine the MARC fields and their function. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qWW7wr3pWau7wbAbthSB9lLcv3T0xYol990FV48MpbM/edit Should we share this with RMFG?

The SILS mission is to transform library services and operations through innovation and collaboration. The future is shared!
